The M-3PO Military Protocol Droid was a small but very important subset of Cybot Galactica`s total 3PO output. Since there introduction military protocol droids have become a popular addition to many plannetary garrisons, and starfighter bases much to the dismay of many soldiers.
The droids look diffrent from there diplomatic counterparts but they are no less annoying. Even thought the units title is a military unit they aren`t built for combat, but instead the droids are administrative organizers acquainted with the rules, requlations, and procedures of over six million military and paramilitary organizations both past and present.
This includes honor codes, cermonial protocols, and historical military doctrines. Most of the time M-3PO`s specialize in equippment requisitioning, barracks billeting, duty roster planning, and personnel file managment. The units are notorious sticklers for paperwork and going through the proper channels, and since most military bureaucracies are hopelessly sluggish a simple order for two dozen blaster rifles can take a regiments M-3PO weeks to fill. The military 3PO unit is built with the standard 3PO bodies and are painted black, and the clamshell-shaped heads are used which were appropriated from Cybot Galactica`s discontinued KW traffic controller line.
The unit has two red photoreceptors that glow from the dark cavity between the upper and lower halves of the head, and this is also where most of the communications and sensor equipment is stuffed. The M-3PO units are suscepitble to all the physical shortcommings of the 3PO series, including stiff joints and poor balance. During the New Republic & Rogue Squadron`s flight to capture Coruscant the squadron had an M-3PO unit nicknamed "Emtrey." Many years earlier the droid had been cobbled together at the Rebel Alliance`s Echo Base on Hoth with parts from three junked M-3PO`s. This radical rebuild allowed his assemblers to make some unique modifications to Cybot Galactica`s basic design.
Emtrey was programmed with commodities-brokering software and was given a second "scrounging" personality, this allowed him to enage in bribery, bartering, and blackmarket transactions. Most of all upon hearing a verbal code phrase, Emtrey slumpes into an inactive wait-state so that his memories and trade files could be accessed remotely, and the only way to rouse him from his sleep is to depress a red reset button hidden at the top of his neck post.
Emtrey fullfilled a duel role, executing the squadron`s day-to-day administrative duties while simultaneously keeping an eye on Tycho Celchu (a suspected Imperial pawn) at the behest of New Republic General Airen Cracken. Following Celchu`s exoneration, Emtrey stayed on with Rogue Squadron and served with distinction for many more years to come.
