Right after Cybot Galactica developed the remote-controlled observation camera called AC1 Surveillance "Spy-Eye," the Lornonar Corporation had to trump there rival, which they did with the smaller, lighter, and less obtrusive "Fly Eye." Lornonar`s Fly Eye is a masterpiece of miniaturization that measures no longer than three human finger-widths even with its legs extended fully. The tiny spherical body is mainly made up of a remarkably quiet repulsorlift engine, that is capable of giving the droid a maximum foward speed of ten kilometers per hour and a flight ceiling of nine meters. The repulsorlift engine gets quiet hot after extended use, so four wide venting ports are necessary to keep the droid delicate internal gears from frying under the extreme tempature. Every little space inside the droid that isn`t taken up by the repulsorlift engine is used by the droids high-imaging holographic lens and coded transmission circuitry.
The visual data is sent in real time via a tightbeam signal to a remote receving unit. These droids are usally directed from afar by an operator with joystick control pads, even thought the droids posses enough intellegence to follow rudimentary search-and-spy flight patterns. When the droid reachs a strategic observation vista it secures itself to the wall or ceiling with its clawed limbs and then shuts down its repulsorlift engine. This passive mode makes the droid very difficult to detect on any security scan, but its tightbeam transmission is still vulnerable to sensor jamming. The Fly Eye does have a disadvantage and that is its data is visual data only, due to the fact that audio receptors would add too much weight and would overtax the small engine. Right after there introduction into the market they became hits, mainly with jealous lovers, fidgety paranoiacs, and scruple-free reporters of the sensationalistic media.
News agencies like the Galactic News refused to use the tiny droids, because they didn`t want to invade beings privacy too much. When they did this they soon found themselves scooped on the juiciest stories by the exploitative bottom feeders at NovaNetwork. There have been hundreds of planets now who have passed laws outlawing fly eyes, but most journalists are willing to pay a small fine in exchange for exclusive footage of a holo-celebrity`s secluded wedding or an Imperial Moff`s secret payoff. The TriNebulon News network broke a major story four years after the Battle of Endor when one of its fly eyes was hidden inside the Imperial Palace recorded Han Solo`s shocking kidnapping of Princess Leia Organa.
When the silent compelling footage was broadcast across the newsnets it touched off a firestorm of public intrest untill the princess and her abductor returned safely from the planet of Dathomir.
