Industrial Automations new R5 astromech line was a line that was a flop even with IA`s slogan of "How do you fix what isn`t broken? Answer: you don`t." The R5`s line was commissioned with no specific market or function in mind, and IA`s insistence on cutting corners left the model without the versatility of the R2 line.

The company only created the new droid not because consumers wanted one but because they could. Dismal first-quater sales figures were a bracing wake-up call to Industrial Automation and a warning bell to the rest of the industry. There was one word that described the R5 "cheep," and it was a cheep model becoming the least-expensive astromech model and it showed in the interior construction that was shabby, shoddy and wasn`t even worth half of what IA wanted for it.

The model`s behavioral circuitry matrix was prone to unwelcome glitches over time, that caused the R5 to acquire caustic and disagreeable personalities which didn`t help with its popularity. Many buyers also reported problems with cronic overhearting, jammed servos, loose bearings, and blown motivators, and due to all this each sales season got worse and finally IA disabled the R5 line.

The R5 did feature a heavy grasper with a twenty-five-kilo lifting capacity and a fine manipulator arm with less that one-micrometer placement accuracy. The R5 like other astromechs moved around on a three legged wheel system and it was outfitted with a holographic projector, arc welder, circular saw, and fire extinguisher. A row of three tiny photoreceptors and sensors replaced the large radar eye found on earlier models. The droids could be purchased in bulk for next to nothing, but their one-jump hyperspace capacity made them useless as starfighter counterparts.

The Rebel Alliance did do some serious installing and reprogramming on their larfe stable of R5`s, and when they were finished the modified units could hold six, seven, even ten sets of navigational coodinates in its active memory. The droids personality problems did remain though, and many pilots didn`t like the larger flower pot head which offered a larger target to many enemy`s laser cannons.
