R6 & R7 Droid
< Droiden
When the Galactic Civil War`s Battle of Endor between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance came to an end and the New Republic became most beings were getting a new start under the New Republic. Even Industrial Automation took the chance to get in on it, even though IA`s image was tarnished by the R5 astromech.
Industrial Automation approached the leaders of the New Republic and hammered out a lucrative military contract, and IA agreed to design and build a new state-of-the-art astromech for exclusive use in a proposed starfighter called the E-Wing Starfighter. But unfortunately, the project was to take several years in development, and to fill in the gap the R6 unit was released by IA to the public with widespread distribution and an insecapable adverstising campaign.
The R6 unit had been on the drawing board for many years and IA engineers had solved all the bugs that made its predecessor such a headache. The new droid perfictly replicated the R2`s pleasant personality and array of hidden gadgets. The droids processor was a significant step-up from the R5`s, and became capable of storing up to twelve hyperspace jumps in memory, and also the unit was priced to move, but it was more expensive than the R4 or R5, and it costs less than the R2.
Consumers bought the R6 in droves, untill the brilliant campaign of Grand Admiral Thrawn shatered the brief stretch of peace and prosperity. On the tail of the Thrawn campaign came the unstoppable armies of the Cloned Emperor Palpatine, and now the R7 astromech was needed more than ever. Industrial Automation worked closely with the E-Wing`s designers at Frei-Tek, Inc., and the droids were nearly complete. But unfortunally before final testing was completed the droid was pressed into active service to fight the Emperor`s World Devastators at Mon Calamari.
The new R7 astromech is the most sophisticated astromech available anywhere, and it performs multitasking operations at blinding speed and can hold an amazing fifteen sets of hyperspace coordinates in its active memory. This droid is also fully armored against power surges and can withstand a near-direct hit from a Class-One Ion Cannon. The droid sits behind the cockpit of the E-Wing in a sealed compartment and greatly augments the ship`s flight performence.
The R7`s greatest weakness is part of its strenght, and that is that since it was designed specifically for the E-Wing it doesn`t work well with other starfighters, and had IA fully anticipated this, but considered the skill to be an acceptable trade-off for versatility. When the Jedi Master Luke Skywalker briefly owned an E-Wing Starfighter and its astromech counterpart, R7-T1, he never felt full comfortable with either the vessel or the droid and ceased using both following the crisis in the Koornacht Cluster.
