The famous R2 model astromech unit moved from a risky design concept to a record-breaking phenomenon, dominating the small-droid market like a bantha at an Ewok picnic, with the help of its ad slogan "No Job Is Over This Little Guy`s Head." For a time it seemed everyone in the galaxy wanted an R2 unit, and also for a time it seemed as if Industrial Automation could do no wrong, and even MechTech Illustrated put in there magazine the new R2, "was one of the most versatile, multitalented droids we`ve ever seen.
The R2 unit can do it all." Just like its forerunners the R2 astromech was designed to work in and around space vessels as a diagnostic and repair unit. But unlike its predicessors the P2 and R1 units it was only waist-high, which also allowed it to fit perfectly into a standard astromech socket of a military starfighter. This was a radical move by IA, because previously all such droids had been deticated military models, but the R2 quickly became as popular with the Old Republic fighter jocks as it was with the public. If the R2 unit is put into the astromech socket on an X-Wing or Y-Wing starfighter it can monitor flight performence, pinpoints and fixes technical problems, and boosts power from the shipboard systems. The R2 can store up to ten sets of hyperspace coordinates in its active memory, and many units also have the intellegence to perform engine startup and pre-flight taxiing.
The R2 also is a model that operates flawlessly in the vacuum of intersteller space. Industrial Automation equipped the R2 unit with a Intellex IV computer that features over seven hundred diffrent spacecraft configurations, and the R2`s sensor package is equally impressive, incorporating a full-spectrum transceiver and electromagnetic, heat, motion, and life-form detectors. The droid is also equipped with an extendible and fully manuverable video sensor that alows it to inspect small, enclosed spaces.
The R2 astromech`s body is streamline, which when buyers found out the array of tools the R2 had enclosed inside the chassis helped them make the desion to purchase the R2. The tools stored away inside the R2 model include: two manipulator arms, and electric arc welder, a circular saw, a holographic projector, and internal cargo compartment, and a fire extinguisher.
Also in addition Industrial Automation made the droid easy to adjust and upgrade, which include: underwater propellers, laser pointers, zero-gee manuvering jets, remote sensor limpets, and inflatable life rafts.
The personallity of the R2 is obliging, quick-witted, and sincere, and if the droid goes too long without memory wipes they sometimes develop headstrong self-reliant streaks, but many owners actually perfer to have companions willing to offer candid second opionions.
