The MerenData EV series had began as a benign industrial midmanagement product, but a bizzare factory foulup gave many of the droids sick, sadistic personalities of professional torturers. The embarrassing details of the disaster are known to almost no one outside the stuffy offices of the MerenData board of directors. The droids frail-like looking bodies were orginally built for a life of work in a factory enviorment, and not as brute laborers, but rather as droids to oversee other worker droids, report production problems, and maintain a safe and efficient working enviornment.
MerenData had hoped that their new product the EV could replace organic shift bosses in assembly plants throughout the Core because it of its high-frequency binary comlink, broadband broadcast antenna/reveiver system, and sophisticated cognitive matirx. But unfortunately for MerenData disaster struck either by negligence or sabotage an employee substituted a case of MDF motivators that were intended for use in torture droids with the standard EV motivators. Then when the supervisors were finally released for sale an uncomfortable number of them had temperaments variously described as "ruthless," "vicious," and "psychotic."
The board of directors and MerenData did not take any immediate action since torture droids were highly illegal, and the company wasn`t even suposed to have access to MDF motivators. Besides for MerenData it started out good because the droids seemed to make excellent supervisors, due to the fact that their efficiency ratings were off the scale, but unfortunately so was the attrition rate of their overworked droid underlings. When MerenData was faced with a massive lawsuit they decided to institute a full recall and to replace the faulty motivators, and they tried this to cover up the incident as best as they could.
After the replacement models were released that included the Imperial-issue "V series" they became unimpressive performers and the entire EV series became a financial failure. Not all of the tainted EV`s were brought in durring the recall, and one of these included EV-9D9 who was head of the automated security on Bespin`s Cloud City
